Seventeen by Kenzabuo Oé

Editions Gallimard 2015 (French translation)

I read the French version of this short story which I happened upon at my friend Becky’s house.

It’s about a seventeen-year-old adolescent, who feels lost and uncared for by his family, and is extremely self-consious in social situations. This leads him to appreciate fascist ideas which facilitate forgetting the individual, himself. The story is inspired by the real-life assassination of a socialist party leader by a young right wing extremist in 1960s Japan.

Well written.
